portret of Cosimo I de Medici by Tommaso ManzuoliThis portrait of Cosimo I de Medici, duke of Florence and Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519 – 1574) is probably one of the earliest representations of a watch. It was painted around 1560 by Tommaso Manzuoli and belongs to the London Science Museum’s collection. The watch must have been a very early model, as the first portable timepieces were introduced at the beginning of the 16th century.

Cosimo the Great was a prominent member of the illustrious Medici dynasty that ruled Florence from 1434 to 1737. The influence of the Medicis on the arts and science during the renaissance is unchallenged. They surrounded themselves with art and fostered many of the greatest renaissance artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli. The Uffizi Gallery, which houses many art treasures of this glorious era, is considered one of the great works of Cosimo I.
